Snacks and Lunchtimes

Following information gained from Healthcare Professionals at a recent Early Years Partnership meeting held at Busy Bees, we developed a Packed Lunch policy.  This policy sets out the importance of developing good, healthy eating routines within the early years and offers suggestions to parents for lunch box ideas.

As a guide, we encourage:

*sandwiches with healthy fillings such as ham, cheese, egg etc.

*pasta salad

*rice salad

*pitta breads

*bread sticks

*fruit and vegetables

We would appreciate it if you could refrain from including chocolate bars, sweets or crisps in lunchboxes.

The Packed Lunch policy compliments our Snack policy.

Children are provided with a snack during the morning and afternoon which is served as a cafe-style snack.  The snack is usually prepared by the staff who are trained in Food Hygiene, however, there are occasions when the children help.  The food, cartons of milk, fresh water, cups, straws and plates are set up on a table in the classroom and the children are encouraged to serve themselves with support.  The cafe-style allows children to come and join the snack table when they choose as we realise that children may not all be hungry and thirsty at the same time.  Our cafe style snack helps children develop independence and self confidence and therefore impacts on their development within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

We find that the cafe style snack also allows children more freedom in their play as their play is not disrupted in order for them to sit down for snack at a specified time.  Our preschool snack is healthy and nutritious and includes a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables as well as an option of rice cakes, breadsticks, crackers or crackerbreads, for example.

After School Club:

Children at After School are provided with a snack when they arrive which again is healthy and nutritious.  Our menu includes fruit, vegetables, pasta, noodles, sandwiches, toast, crackers, bagels etc.  Please be aware that this is a snack only and in no way substitutes a full meal.

Allergy Information:

At Busy Bees, we are very mindful of food allergies and therefore all staff are aware of children’s particular requirements and our menus are planned accordingly. If your child does suffer with a food allergy, it is important for you to inform us so we can take the necessary precautions at snack and lunchtimes. The Food Standards Agency have published a list of 14 allergens which wyou can find in one of the links below. Of the allergens, we provide snacks which contain the following:

Cereals containing gluten – we serve cereals at Breakfast Club as well as at snack time during Preschool and After School Club. Flour is used during baking activities and is present in some packaged food products purchased for snack including crackers, rice cakes, breadsticks, pasta, bread, crumpets and waffles

Eggs – used in baking activities.

Milk – this is served daily with snack as well as used on cereals. Also present in some packaged foods used for snacks. May also be used in baking.
