PE Sessions

Our PE sessions on a Thursday morning are very popular. This term we are continuing to practise skills leant from last term and we will be exploring movement to a variety of music through Expressive Arts and Design. We begin our session by the children eagerly wanting to get changed into their PE kits - t-shirt, shorts and pumps.

We then make our way over to the school hall ready to begin our 30 min session. The children take part in a warm up - usually Pasta PE - e.g. I say a different variety of Pasta e.g. - Spaghetti hoop -the children make a hoop in a small group or Pasta bow  - the children walk around with their arms and legs apart like a bow. Sometimes, our warm up is Mr Men so when I say "Mr Fast" the children walk fast., Mr Small, Crouch low etc. These are both firm favourites and the children like to take the lead and shout out the next move. We also do a variety of stretches and the children always enjoy showing us a new way of stretching. We then talk about why we warm up and the effect of exercise on our bodies. We then begin our activities.

All activities are planned around the EYFS some are led by the child and often follow on from an activity they had enjoyed the previous week. Last week the children worked together as to create a fantastic obsticle course where they positioned the equipment (with our help) to be able to walk along the beams, step across the different sized tables, climb up an ‘A’ frame down the other side then climb up a second frame and slide down a bench. The children are always enthusiastic about our PE sessions and they are enjoyed by all. The children recently enjoyed lots of ball play they especially liked rolling different sized ball to each other. We also looked at a triangular ball and talked about how we though it would be different to a round ball

Some of the equipment we have used  - Bats, different sized balls for throwing, catching and rolling, skipping ropes, hoops, bean bags, climbing equipment.

Learning in relation to the EYFS -

Recognise the change that happens to their bodies when they are active
Respond to rhythm, music and story by means of gesture and movement
Use movement to express feelings

“Physical development involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive and to develop their coordination, control and movement. Children must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food”
