Tesco Farm to Fork Visit

On Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoon this week, the children in our Butterfly group visisted Tesco, Ledbury as part of the nationwide Farm to Fork initiative.  The aim of this is to encourage children to develop an interest in where their food comes from.  You can find out more about Farm to Fork here:

To begin, the children listened really well as the Tesco staff leading the project talked to us about the rules we had to remember whilst at Tesco.  We then visited the store room to see where the deliveries arrive.  The children were especially interested in the fridge and freezers and were able to name items which are kept in a fridge including ham, cheese, yoghurts and milk.  This week we have been thinking about Winter and 'Frozen' which we linked to our visit by encouraging the children to think about the temperature in the fridge.  It was very cold and the children noticed that they could see their breath.  We looked at the numbers on the temperature gauges and worked out that it was minus twenty degress......brrrrrr!

The Tesco staff then took us to the bakery where we tried hot cross buns.  The fish counter was next where the lady told us about the different fish and how some swim on the sea floor so are flat and have eyes on the top of their head rather than the sides.  Fish didn't seem very popular with the children - they said they only like fish fingers not 'proper' fish!

At the cheese counter, we all tasted different cheeses including a stripey one which was quite popular.  We then took part in a challenge where we had to find different coloured fruit and vegetables - the children did really well with this and enjoyed finding and naming a range of fruits.

In the training room, the children were able to try some of the fruit which they had spent time spotting upstairs.  Fruits included grapes; raspberries; strawberries; blackberries; pineapples; blueberries and melon.

The group who went on Tuesday morning had the opportunity to make a pizza and the Thursday group made a fruity layered dessert.

To finish, we had a go on the checkouts, scanning items through, pressing the buttons on the screen and waiting for the receipt.

The visits were a huge success and the children got so much out of the sessions.  We would like to say a big thank you to Tesco and the staff who looked after us so well - it really was a pleasure to visit and we appreciate your time and the effort you went to to make our visits special.

Here are some photos from the sessions.......it was so hard to decide which ones to include as there are some really lovely ones so we've included all of the best.

We hope you enjoyed looking at our photos.  Thanks again to Tesco Ledbury!
