Caring for Sid and Sally

The children at Busy Bees enjoy taking care of Sid and Sally, our giant African land snails.  Once a week, the children help change the soil and gently brush the snail's shells with water using small paintbrushes.  Children are chosen daily to help feed them, giving them a sense of responsibility in helping to care for the snails.

Today, we blended up cucumber, green pepper and lettuce to make 'snail soup' which the children painted on to the sides of the tank.  Using magnifying glasses, we could see the snails opening and closing their mouths as they made their way up the sides, eating up the snail soup.

Now that the snails have grown significantly, they are big enough to handle for those who are feeling brave!
