Loose Parts Play

 The children at Busy Bees have always enjoyed loose parts play but this half term we are making it a particular focus.  Loose parts play involves lots of objects which children can explore freely and use to make arrangements, patterns and representations - they can be used in any way the children want.

So far this half term, we have been using the following:

* Dolly pegs

* Glass nuggets

* Raffia balls

* Craft matchsticks

* Buttons

* Lollipop sticks

* Corks

* Wood slices

We have a beautiful large hand made frame which we use these loose parts in.  It is placed on the floor and the children can gather around the outside with plenty of space to play.  As some of the parts are small, we ensure the activity is well supervised at all times and all objects are cleared away afterwards to avoid a choking hazard for some of the younger children.

The joy of loose parts play is that there are no rules - children use the objects as they want.  It is also a great way to observe interactions between children, language, counting and sorting. As the parts are small, loose parts play is great for developing fine motor skills and hand/eye coordination.
